Tinnitus is a condition where you hear this ringing sound in your ears when there truly is not a sound. One of the biggest medical scares in recent history is making its way around the world as the swine flu continues to spread. After infecting thousands of people during the summer, this bug won’t go away and doctors and scientists have told the public to brace itself for a worsening condition.
The most baffling thing about this strain of flu is the fact that perfectly healthy young people are more vulnerable to the effects of it than older or sickly people.
Many are wondering what to do and how they can possibly protect themselves from this epidemic in the making.
Having said that, officials are recommending the use of an H1N1 and regular flu vaccine each year to minimize the chances of the worst possible impact nationwide that health officials fear. They say this is the best protection against potential infection.
On the other hand, the swine flu is said to only end up killing less than one percent of those afflicted with it. Being that just a fraction of one percent of those will face a death rate, is it worth getting vaccinated from this epidemic?
People grow more concerned with reports of adverse bodily reactions to flu vaccines. One woman was literally rendered speechless and immobile after being vaccinated, and the story was covered by major media outlets.
Whether she received a bad vaccine or this was simply a risk that everyone who gets a shot will experience, no one is exactly sure. However, the best course of action is to speak to your doctor for a legitimate professional opinion.
There is no doubt that H1N1 will be in the news for quite some time. Unfortunately, this may just be its beginning.

Many sleep problems and conditions are not deadly and only pose a minor inconvenience. Sleep apnea, however, is not one of the disorders that should be taken lightly. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder where your body forgets to breath during the night and it is possible to have a mild case and not even be aware of it.
There are various degrees of this condition and in many people it is not much of a problem. But for those who suffer from severe sleep apnea, every night could potentially be their last. Diabetes is a disease that almost 24 million people in the U.S. have. Although about a quarter of these people do not know they have Diabetes. This disease is one where a person’s body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that helps to covert starches and sugar into energy that is then used by the body. There are a few varieties to this disease which we will take a look at.
Type 1 Diabetes
About 5-10% of people have Type 1 Diabetes, which is when the body does not produce insulin. To address this type of Diabetes the individual must take shots of insulin to help their bodies be able to convert starches, sugars and other foods into energy in the form the body needs it to be.
Type 2 Diabetes
The majority of those who have Diabetes have Type 2 Diabetes. Interestingly, many of the people who have Type 2 Diabetes do not know it. With this type of Diabetes an individual’s body does not create enough insulin or use the insulin created appropriately. These people must be cognizant of their sugar levels and focus on keeping them level through exercise and diet. There are also some medications that can assist.
Gestational Diabetes
Some women might experience Gestational Diabetes which is Diabetes during their pregnancy. Many women will not have Diabetes after their pregnancy, although about 5-10% will have Type 2 Diabetes. During a pregnancy where the mother has Gestational Diabetes the baby will gain weight quickly.
Pre-Diabetes
About 57 million people have pre-diabetes. This is a condition where a person’s blood sugar level is higher than what would be “normal” for that person. Although the sugar levels are higher it is not quite high enough for the individual to be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
Not all types of Diabetes can be prevented. Although the type of Diabetes that most people have can be, which is Type 2 Diabetes. To lower your risks you should focus on eating a healthy diet as well as increasing physical exercise.
Losing weight and having a healthy balanced diet are two areas to focus to prevent Type 2 Diabetes. By losing 5-7% of your current body weight you will greatly be reducing your level of risk of becoming Type 2 Diabetic. Concentrate your diet on whole grains, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. Also, you should reduce intake of refined carbohydrates, sugars and sugary drinks. Quit smoking if you currently smoke.
Begin exercising 30 minutes per day can help with losing weight as well as controlling blood sugar levels. By using your muscles more you will help them use insulin more effectively to absorb glucose in your bloodstream to keep blood sugar moderate and not too high.

Every sense our body has is important and the same is true for our sense of hearing. A great example of this would be your ears hearing the sound of screeching tires allowing you to determine which direction the sound originated from and enabling you to move out of the way to safety. However, if you were hearing impaired, your sense of hearing would not have picked up on the warning sound, resulting in injury or worse.
Severe damage to the auditory system is the cause of hearing impairment. Each ear is comprised of inner, middle and outer ear chambers. These chambers contain the necessary structures needed to hear. A loss of hearing becomes present due to damage from such things as illness, trauma or infections.
Four types of hearing loss include conductive, sensorineural, mixed, and central hearing loss. Hearing loss can be mistaken for other conditions such as depression or dementia, and usually happens within the senior population. As we get up in age, hearing loss is common. This is due to the destruction of the hair cells in the cochlea. These hair cells are vital to hearing. Once they are destroyed they can’t be replaced, making hearing loss permanent.
Signs And Symptoms:
Constantly needing conversation to be repeated Extreme volume on the TV, radio, or other electronic device Depression Withdrawal from social activities Unable to understand speech No response to sound
In adults, hearing loss may be gradual and not noticed in the beginning. Many times, it is not recognized until damage to the auditory system is extensive. Other times it is not picked up until a visit to the doctor for other reasons. Your doctor will then need to determine the type of hearing loss you have, the degree, and the location in the auditory system it has occurred. Additionally, hearing loss in adults can be attributed to aging (presbycusis), tumors, and viral infections such as the flu or herpes.
In children, hearing loss can be due to bacterial or viral insults to their systems. Although it can happen at any age, these are the most common reasons for hearing loss in children: mumps, rubella, meningitis, and multiple sclerosis.
Diagnosis and treatment:
A thorough medical examination and diagnostic testing is used to determine if there is a loss of hearing. Other causes of hearing loss must be ruled out as well.
Methods of treatment for hearing loss include surgical intervention, hearing aids and medications. However, prevention is the number one tool that can save your precious gift. Sports injuries are the most common activities that may cause tendon strain. The Achilles tendon that connects the calf muscles to the anklebone are often injured by those who play basketball.
When such an injury takes place, usually rest of the body part is indicated, as is putting ice on it. The part is then often wrapped which offers some pain relief as well as preventing swelling. Finally, the injured part is elevated above the heart, if possible, as that too prevents swelling and minimizes the pain.
Putting stress on any tendon is likely to result in an injury if a repetitive activity is emphasized too much or if something happens to overstretch the tendon quickly. This would happen for example if a weightlifter continued to work out the tendon every day, regardless of the warning of pain. Pain indicates that rest is needed by the body in order to repair the injured tissue. To prevent tendon strain, a body must be conditioned for it. This is why too, even professional dancers stretch prior to rehearsal or a performance.
Tendon strain or injury is easy to diagnose while looking at the loss of motion as well as pain someone may feel. However, further testing may be required by the use of such tests as an ultrasound, MRI and even x-rays. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are generally prescribed for the condition.

When this problem is a result of trauma, it comes on quickly, but in most instances, it takes nearly a year to develop a case of calcific tendonitis that would be harsh enough for the sufferer to go get medical treatment. The reason is because in the beginning, the pain is not strong and the person has not lost much range of motion so their shoulder mobility is not limited.
Gradually the pain will get worse and will often disrupt sleep because the pain is usually stronger at night. With the increase in pain, there is also the start of loss of the range of motion to the shoulder. So doing things like putting away dishes will make you feel pain, and even playing tennis will become difficult when you cannot raise your tennis racket.
Treatments like shots of cortisone have helped many people, but there is a concern with those. The physician giving the shot must put it in a precise location. Finding the correct location is not easy, even for a well-trained physician, and so with the use of devices like x-rays and diagnostic ultrasonography, doctors can place the shot in the right spot.
Following this treatment, much of the pain associated with calcific tendonitis may disappear or at least lessen. It is then that an extreme amount of physical therapy must ensue.
Usually you can do the exercises in your home, however most people end up going to a physical therapist to get an efficient guided rehabilitation program. Much of the exercises are very easy. For instance, standing facing a wall, you use the fingers of your affected shoulder to just walk up the wall. At first, you will only be able to do a bit of this exercise, but as time goes on you will be able to do more. Pilates have even been said to help in some cases as well.
As mentioned the complete immobilization of your shoulder probably took months to create, and your therapy will also take months on months to receive complete relief. You will however, be able to mark your progress, albeit slowly. A number of other treatments are often tried, such as ice, heat, and you may also receive nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as well.
If you do not experience any relief from the various therapies to treat your calcific tendonitis and you have done them faithfully for many months, then the final answer may be surgery. You should look at different options such as more rigorous physical therapy first, and even after surgery, you will likely need a good physical therapy regimen.
